Calendula is a well-known medicinal and ornamental plant. It is annual or perennial plant, growing 30 to 60 cm, with waxy, smooth, or glandular stems. The leaves can be somewhat toothed and are borne alternately along the stems. The composite flower heads, borne singly, consist of yellow or orange ray flowers and central disk flowers that can be yellow, red, or purple in colour. The fruit is a curved achene. It blooms from June until late autumn. Medicinal calendula is cultivated in sunny gardens and fields. Calendula flowers contain carotenoids, floral substances, flavonoids, essential oils, triterpene glycosides, mucus, organic acids, ascorbic acid, minerals, as well as microelements such as zinc, copper-molybdenum, selenium. It has been experimentally proven that calendula preparations have a calming effect, prolongs sleep, stimulates heartbeat, lowers blood pressure and deepens breathing. The preparations are used as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcer. Calendula is often used in inflammation of the bile ducts, caused by an infection in liver function disorders, most often after a viral inflammation or damage by poisonous toxic compounds. Also reduces gynaecological pain, regulates menstruation.
Calendula infusions and decoctions are made from 1 teaspoon of herbs per 1 cup of water. Drink 1/3 - 1/2 glasses between meals. For infusion, you can also take 2 tablespoons of flowers per glass of water and drink 1 or 2 tablespoons 2 or 3 times a day. Tincture (1:10 with 70% alcohol) is used 10-20 drops at a time.
For the treatment of diseases of the digestive organs is recommended a complex tea, made in equal parts of calendula, chamomile and yarrow flowers. For the treatment of liver and gall bladder disease, folk medicine recommends the following mixture: 7 or 8 tablespoons of calendula tincture, 1 cup of currant juice and ½ cup of honey.
Calendula flower infusions and decoctions, as well as a tincture (1 teaspoon per glass of water), are used externally for rinsing the mouth, gums and tonsils in case of inflammation and for treatment of conjunctivitis and barley grain. They are also used for gynaecological problems - in cases of cervical erosion, trichomonal infestations, and in the enema of the rectum.
Calendula flowers, tincture, emulsion, gel and fresh juice are used to treat various wounds, frostbite, burn, furuncle, acne, eczema, eyelid inflammation, oedema and lymphadenoma. Compresses help prevent inflammation of the veins caused by a fungal infection.
